“I smoke a weed sac so I can relax, and get so loaded, I have a mental relapse. I don’t play, everyday I be stayin’ high. So blowed that I be looking like an Asian guy”. Yes, this track is vibey as hell. It makes me feel like I’m in a dark room full of smoke. “I remember my first bag, just a youngin’ tryna find my path. Open my eyes and see the real world was drag. I knew too much”. Rhythm Section is 3 dudes with very smooth flows, articulate lyrics and compelling characters. “Yo stop babysitting. Hey homie, pass that. So many smokers in here, I ain’t getting my trees back (…) Spend allot of my wealth on top shelf, twisting up fatties, medicating myself”. Weed Made is a weed anthem with killer imagery. “I’m smoking on some tree that feel like the back of a sticker”. Roll up and chief some of that FRE$H.
“Calm cool confident, compliments of rap lyrics with consciousness. Grateful to whoever put you on this”. I-MC has a flow from an alternate timeline. What if rap music kept getting classier over the years? What if the beats moved closer to their jazzy roots? “Bass got a monster kick, drums with the perfect pitch, keys on some other shit”. Mmmhmm, and that synth line before the first verse is trés tasty. “(you) Say that ‘That’s life’, but really, is you livin’ it? ‘Cause when I found the limits, I learned the limit was limitless”. Tongue twister, but true. Push your limits, and you’ll realize they aren’t there. “Chasing the dream but will settle for cabbage, ’cause long as we fed, I’ll be happy to have it”. Odd sentiment for a rapper, but it goes in line with the humble/confident dichotomy that is I-MC. Take That Step, and stay FRE$H”
“I’m doing things my own way, at my own pace. Record my mutherfuckin’ self and mix it at my own place”. I admire that stance. Don’t wait for anybody to help you out. “This be that shit that you crave. Been unemployed for a while but still been working for days. N*ggas still gon’ bite the style despite what they say. Got my name all in they mouth but spit it out in my face”. Mike G goes 52 bars without a hook. Rapping about the dependence of other rappers on handouts, the loyalty of his own crew, and his will to connect with the listener. “Started killing shit, put my heart and spirit in my music. But I’ll never sell my soul out to sell a show out. Just keep it real and make sure people feel it when I do it .” Jodice Back feels like some real shit. Doused in cali style and dripping with wit. “Some people hate me ’cause they say that I’m too arrogant. Still they need my music like Boy George needed heroine”. This dudes composure is FRE$H.
“We out here being watched. The judge throwing time. N*ggas rattin’ like Splinter just to keep from going down.” Bam! Ninja Turtles reference. +10 points for rapper DRASTIK. ‘Winter’ is his message to the Windy City. He addressed her “Dear Windy”, and saturates his verses with winter metaphor. He’s a word smith. “Pretty light skin, colder than them other broads, with a body so mean like a centerfold. Centerpiece, stand out like the pinnacle. She was soul food, complete with the dinner roll.” At this point It sounds like DRASTIK is talking about a woman, but listen to the rest of the verse and It becomes clear that he’s talking about cocaine. “Behold an artist with an arctic flow. It’s wintertime when I spit so grab a scarf and a coat”. I listened to a few of DRASTIK’s tracks and I must say, I’m a fan. We hope to hear more soon DRAS, stay FRE$H.
“If you wanna be respected, you gotta do something that nobody ever expected. Otherwise you blend in, and that’s a fine place to be but it’s not the place for me”. Jordan is doing something that nobody expected, he’s rapping about how much he hates his job. “When I walk in to work I hate it, but everyone who sees me thinks that I love it. When I walk in I can barely take it. No, this is not a place to work that I covet.” It’s angsty, and THAT is what rap was built on. I mean, listen to ‘The Message’ and imagine that Grand Master Flash is a suburbanite who traveled 30 years into the future to work a desk job… that’s Jordan. “When I ask my boss a yes-or-no question it ends up as an hour long lecture. While he’s talking I think about my girlfriend. I’m bored, so I pull out my phone and I text her “, and it’s that ‘Fuck the System’ kind of attitude that we foster here at NeverSign. Jordan, stay unique -and- stay FRE$H.
“My life (is) a dream. Spittin’ fire like Liu Kang, but no pain no gain. Make my lettuce… romaine.” Any rapper who makes a Mortal Kombat reference is OK in my book. Any rapper named after a whiskey is doubly *hiccup* OK in my book. If you’re rapping about salad fixin’s though… that’s a whole ‘nother level. Johnny Walker Black is a confident rapper, you can hear it in his delivery and lyrics. “Try to quit me, HipHopoholics stay drunk off JWB.”. That’s me. I can’t quit lines like “Baby girl said she want a thug, but I’m clean cut, no C-section”, and “Head honcho. Drink till I’m Tonto. Ride out like The Lone Ranger.” JWB is making lettuce. I hope he keeps it FRE$H.
“Money be the topic and I like my woman topless. No basic chicks, I met an asian chick and she all on my chopstick.” Oooh, me rikey. Everyday’s a muff huggin’ weekend when you live like Primo Nellz and Tripuhl iii of 1ST CLASS. Drunk by noon? Yes. Nekkid chicks in your bed? Yes. Floating like an island? ‘Ere day! I’m feeling the production on this one. It’s well put together and delivers a concise message. “I don’t treat these tricks, no Halloween. No sticks, no seeds, that’s allot of weed. Hop out lookin’ like I hit the lottery.” Hey Primo & Tripuhl, can we hang out some time? No biggie if not, I can just listen to the track again and pretend that I’m your friend. Until next time, Stay FRE$H.
“I give gifts in forms of 2 fists if you fucking with my business, get it?” Angel what have you done!? This shit is way too f*cking dope. Tight hook, articulate rhymes, clean timing, and the sexiest voice I’ve heard. Lines like “Misfits fuckin’ with a Mrs. who’s quick wit will get you wetter than your bitch could” -And- “Meanest little chica from The Underworld to Eden, ain’t got no time for no pussy niggas, I mean it” reveal that Angel Davanport could go 12 rounds in a battle against anyone. If she’s your competition, you might as well give up. Mrs. Davanport, we’re crushing pretty hard. Stay FRE$H.
“You got herpes on your lips since you gave your mom a kiss” DISS! WordShip’s calm delivery, straightforward syncopated rhythm, and story driving vocal caricatures remind me of an 80′s rap icon… Slick Rick. WordShip is “an underachiever with the biggest of ambitions (…) a wife who can cook, and a side chick for dishes, plus a house in the bahamas with some tropical bitches.”. Here here Word’, I too have those same ambitions. “I was born without a hope, but these things happen for a reason, ’cause then I discovered rap and now I love the air I’m breathing.” If thats your motivation Word’, then you’re on the right track. Keep up the craft, and stay FRE$H.
“Fuck a monkey with a donkey dick”. Don’t let his smooth voice fool you, JPARK goes hard. ‘Yeah Yeah’ from his 5th mixtape ‘Noise Is My Muse’ circles around the theme that everything that can be said in a rap song has already been said, but has it? JPARK goes on to say things that have never been, and will never again be said in a rap song. Like for example, “I don’t really give a fuck as long as we fuck like a goose and a duck ran over by a truck that just got stuck in a land full of quicksand” and “Got a small dick, but I don’t give a shit”. JPARK, we’re your biggest fans, stay FRE$H.
